| i see a wilderness for you and me, punctuated by philosophy... |
[Mar. 26th, 2007|08:19 pm] |
I don't post on here very frequently because I rarely get responses and even more seldom have something to say.
...but I'm starting a project :)
I am thrilled that I actually have a summer this summer. No job. Probably no class, unless I actually try to learn another language. No real commitments - just roadtrips and reading.
So, I'm looking for books - books that are wonderful, books that you love, books that you think everyone should read. I've started a list, but I'd like to read more than just books I've already been thinking of - books recommended by friends are often the best kind.
Suggestions, please! Comment! Don't be afraid I've already read something; I may have, but I probably haven't (there are a lot of books out there). If I have, I'll give you a recommendation (it seems like a fair trade). |

A) Four jobs I have had in my life: 1. Researcher for USC's international business department (privatization of public goods in Latin America and bank ownership in Russia, what what?) 2. Researcher/Web Author/Speaker Coordinator for Campus Progress (www.campusprogress.org) 3. Researcher for USC's Political Science Department (are you seeing a trend?) OK, so, that's only three. the only other thing remotely resembling a job was when i played the piano in grocery stores during the holidays in high school, but i'd rather forget that...
B) Four movies I would watch over and over: 1. The Godfather 2. Wayne's World 3. Rocky Horror Picture Show 4. My Blue Heaven
C ) Four Places I have Lived: 1. Kingwood, TX 2. Hudson, FL 3. Columbia, SC 4. Washington, DC (though only for a few months)
D) Four TV shows I love to watch: 1. Family Guy 2. Seinfeld 3. Gilmore Girls (shutup) 4. That 70s Show
E) Four places I have been on vacation: 1. Spain (well, study abroad, vacation-ish) 2. San Francisco 3. Costa Rica 4. Florida Keys
F) Websites I visit weekly: 1. www.flickr.com 2. www.t-nation.com (this gorgeous physique is not by accident!) 3. www.thinkprogress.org 4. http://postsecret.blogspot.com
G) Four of my favorite foods: 1. icecream 2. swedish fish 3. potato soup 4. popcorn
H) Four places I would like to be right now: 1. in my big comfy bed in columbia 2. barcelona 3. a deserted beach 4. i've always wanted to see argentina... |

In other words, my application has been held, and I'll receive an answer by "mid-April".
I'm not so impressed with the state schools thus far... |

| | "the execution of all things", rilo kiley | ] | Life has taken a very nice turn in the last week :) I'm no longer buried in work (well, not to quite the same insane degree). My digital camera died on Sunday, but I got a brand spankin' new one (ok, let's ignore the giant hole in my checking account) which is really really awesome (lumix, anyone? It's a panasonic dmc fx07). I then got to take a roadtrip with a great friend to a gorgeous place to play with said camera, hence this picture - 5700' up, and i'm laying on the ledge. hahahahaha! In even better (and more important) news, I got an unrequested fee waiver to Duke, which is most excellent! I'm heading to Durham next weekend to check things out, so if anyone's interested in seeing Raleigh, Chapel Hill, or Durham, hit me up - probably leaving Thursday night so that I can make the Friday morning tour, but you could totally meet up with me later... OK, enough rambling. More cool photos like this found on flickr and (mostly) on facebook!
Oh, and me finally updating this means that YOU should comment, kthx.

| it's been a loooooooong week |
[Aug. 29th, 2006|12:55 pm] |
I got back from Florida about a week and a half ago, but so much has happened since then that that hardly seems relevant (though i had an *excellent* time). I got another cat, his name is Garth. He's orange and spotted. More importantly, he keeps Vito company, which means that they bother me a lot less. It's VERY nice. Jordan and I went to Mepkin Abbey on Sunday, which is gorgeous. It's so peaceful there! I definitely want to go again. Sunday night, my car flooded out while I was at trivia at Delaney's. Despite spending two years tearing up downtown to build new drains so this wouldn't happen, our city lacks the oversight to, oh, i don't know, CLEAN them. There was water up to my dashboard. GEICO called the next day and declared it a total loss. Two days later, I had a check from them for the market value of my car. So, now I have a new car, which is pretty sweet :) Learned the first rhythm stomp in echoes in blues today, which was a ton of fun :) I really love that class. Tonight, I'm off to Charlotte to see the Counting Crows and the Goo Goo Dolls in concert! Wooohooo!

| | "You Are What You Love" Jenny Lewis | ] | So, Turner Classic Movies is having a commercial-free Godfather marathon (they're on Godfather II at the moment), which is wonderful. I am massively in love with the Godfather trilogy, especially the first two (Sofia Coppola makes me question the third...), and I haven't seen them in forever. Awesome! Also, Jenny Lewis' new album (Rabbit Fur Coat) is fabulous, atleast from what I've heard of it. I'm really fond of "You Are What You Love". She's cool.
And, out of boredom... : Go to Music Outfitters and put your high school graduation year into the search box. The first link is likely the top 100 songs of that year. Cut and paste that list here. Bold the ones you actually like. Understand that the word "like" in this case means, at the very least, "wouldn't immediately change the radio station from." Pick a favorite. Underline that favorite. Strike outs the songs you absolutely can't stand. ( The list ) |

| | "monkey", counting crows | ] | OK, fine people of Blatt physical fitness center. The correct time to clean the cardio deck is debatable, but I can *guarantee* you that it's not 10:30 AM. Inhaling floor cleaner + running isn't a great combo. booooo.
(stolen from AJ) (and the "five questions" community) 1. Are you named after anyone? If so, explain. I have a double middle name (Jeanine Katherine) as a compromise to my parents. My mom wanted it to be Katherine, since that name is used atleast once in every generation of females in her family (after, initially, my great grandmother). My dad wanted it to be Jeanine, which is my mother's middle name. Megan isn't after anyone.
2. Do you have your children's names picked out already? If so, is there any significance? I've always thought that that's a decision that should be shared between people. Since I don't have kids and don't plan on having any any time soon (I'm not even sold on having them *at all*), I don't have any names.
3. If you were born a member of the opposite sex what would your name have been? My mom wanted to name me Cassidy. My grandmother attempted to ruin this name by saying "Cassidy" and whistling, since she said it was like a name for an Irish Setter, but it didn't work. So, I would have had lots of issues and bruises throughout childhood.
4. If you could re-name yourself what name would you pick and why? I'm pretty happy with Maggie. I guess I'd go by my middle name (Katherine) and shorten it to Kate.
5. Are there any mispronunciations/typos that people do w/ your name constantly? You'd be amazed at how difficult it apparently is to pronounce "brock". I get "brook" "book" "bock" "broke" and many more. |

www.myheritage.com has a really cool celebrity look-alike thing where it scans pictures of your face and tells you who you look like. Apparently I look like Elizabeth Hurley (76% match on one photo), Adriana Lima (73% match on one), Goldie Hawn (60ish match on most), and Janet Jackson (wtf?).
Who do you look like? |
